Turning LIFE into Transcripts

Unschoolers often don’t have transcripts when they turn 18 and then years later need one to apply to college, technical school, etc. So why not have one when you are finished with your education, just in case? it can be very general, just to cover all the bases, or very specific if you plan to use it for a special purpose.

Drawing on her 32 years of experience as West River Academy’s Director, Peggy will share her journey as the mom of an unschooler, Karen, who enjoyed learning what she was interested in throughout her childhood and then needed a transcript to apply to college.

Karen will tell you that she spent most of her teen years in horse stables! What about all the “academic” stuff needed on a transcript? Well, let’s see, she also played piano, learned to dance, read books, journaled and studied Spanish. That should count for something, right? But what courses can they come under? Where to start? This can be a daunting and frightening task when left to the last minute. We will guide you through the process and show you how to get started on it now so you won’t be caught short later.

We will present examples of activities and show how they can be translated into course names with grades and credits. We will talk about “required” courses and electives and recommend how many credits in each subject area are needed. The final result will be a stellar but traditional-looking transcript that represents the overall learning of an unschooler.
